I sense a firestorm coming on this issue due to the terrible shooting in Connecticut. I wan't to say that as a game design student I'm insulted every time a connection between games and violence is made. Videogames come under attack every time some psycho kills people and also played videogames. Gamers are not psychotic school shooters who fantasize about blowing up someones head. People fail to see videogames as a legitimate art form. The gaming industry is huge yet so many people know so little about games. Too many people see games as mindless violence, which is what they are not. There are not enough representatives of the industry to defend videogames and that is why people do not understand.

Videogames are intended to make money for the developers. If a developer wants to make the most money, he will market his game to what the average person enjoys. A proven fact is that sex sells and that violence is intriguing/attractive to the average person. Therefore, how is it even possible that the argument can be made? Violence is an integral part of everyone's genetics! Without violence, evolution is impossible, and we would have never become the humans that we are today.
People need to understand that media is a mere reflection of what society already wants. If people want mindless violence (call of duty), it is not because call of duty made them violent, it is because they already had an innate desire to experience violence.
The shooting in Connecticut brings a new element into play ; social disorders. People with social disorders are lacking in their interpersonal skills. One important interpersonal skill is Empathy. It is extremely possible that Adam Lanza, the shoot

It's not about restricting the guns, but monitoring what our children see on the screen that brings out violent tendencies. Maybe a stricter law on the media, tv, and videogames and graphic content should be enacted to promote the limited distribution of these images. In this sense, we can discourage and discredit violent tendencies.

all of your arguments on why video games encourage violent behavior, are based on people being idiots:
1. learning something doesn\'t make you use it. do people who play flight simulators try to pilot a plane?
2. video games don\'t teach people how to murder. you press the a button and something dies, it\'s nothing like a real gun.
3. people are not idiots. do you think that some one will become more aggresive in real life just to get extra points?
4. people go to video games to do something they can\'t in real life. why would they suddenly do that in real life.
5. violent games make you more aggresive...while you play them. that doesn\'t make you more aggresive in real life.

It may increase Aggression, but how much does it increase aggression? Does it increase aggression to the point that a non violent person will begin to assault and murder people?

This article is misleading and one-sided. I researched this issue and used the Wikipedia entry "video game controversies" as a starting point then followed or did internet searches for their references. I also did some other internet searches and looked at web pages that looked reliable. The fact of the matter is that there is plenty of academic research that contradicts the implications of this article. The U.S. Surgeon General, The U.S. Dept. of Education(in a joint study with the Secret Service), and the Supreme Court(in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association) in a review of the scientific literature determine that there was no direct link between violent video games and their influence on children. The National Institute of Mental Health also determine that at best there was only a very small increase in violent criminal behavior due to violent video games, but that further research and continued monitoring were warranted. The only real thing that anti-video game research

I would like to ask all the people who say violence in movies, television and video games has no effect on children why we then promote other repetitive viewing of 'educational' entertainment. Consider such programs as Sesame Street, for example, where children learn to count, read and behave in socially accepted ways. Why do we recognize that repeated exposure to good or desirable content will be absorbed by children but continue to deny that repeated exposure to violent content has no effect on them?

Diogenes II says:
@person comparing violence in media to programs like "Sesame Street"
I was only commenting about violent video games and the fact that scientific research indicates that these games have no last negative impact on children and aren't related to violent criminal behavior. Although it is understandable that people might expect that there would be a lasting negative impact, the research shows this isn't the case. It's speculated that most children understand that these games aren't real and don't think it is ok to act that way, and that for many children playing these games is catharctic and has other positive effects that counterbalance any negative effects. Conversely research has shown that "Sesame Street" does have a last positive impact on children. Apparently violent video games aren't mirror images of "Sesame Street" in that regard.
