Having suffered with Crohn's disease for years, and exhausting the spectrum of medications and patience of any health care professional that supplied me with them, I began to look elsewhere for remedies.

Cue the long nights, spent reluctantly on google, trawling from miraculous claims to shady testimonial. There's good money in alternative medicine.. People seem to be searching for that miracle plant, that rare berry used by tribes that "burns" fat off conveniently bypassing exercise and effort, or that "one weird trick" to cure (insert ailment here.) So with my bullshit-detector ringing in my ears smothering any claim in cynicism I delved into the world I imagined middle aged women laden with jewellery inhabited.

Wading through websites I had a fantastic vantage point of how a herb or tea could be blogged about altruistically, then months later be picked up by an opportunistic company selling salves and kits for ridiculous prices. Medicine is like Fuel, it's a bullet-proof market, people will pay what they have to. Luckily plants and herbs can't be all bought and controlled by a handful of companies, meaning the prices served purely as a "what a bunch of pricks" kind of entertainment on those long lonely nights on google. 100 websites later, one name kept reappearing, all with un-wavering miraculous claims that stayed continuous on every website. Cayenne Pepper. Cayenne Pepper is from the Capsicum genus, is a cultivar of Capsicum Annuum and is a popular spice in dishes from Asia and Korea and it's alleged effects on the body are quite amazing.

It's claimed to "equalise" blood pressure all across the body almost instantly, this lowers high blood pressure, slows and possibly stops bleeding of wounds internal and external, and is claimed on a small number of obscure websites, Stops heart attacks dead. Crohn's Disease is a condition which causes inflammation of the intestinal tract causing pain, internal bleeding and other nasty symptoms. Hence the attractiveness of Cayenne peppers anti- inflammatory properties, which is the real reason I walked down to Sainsbury's in the rain to pick up a vial, apart from the beautiful views of the council estates and motorways.

The Pepper is spicy, but that's a small price to pay for health I justified to myself through teary eyes and a mouth hotter than spin the bottle with the cast of coyote ugly.I felt a weird but subtle "high" off the spice, one which could be compared to the feeling of decreasing blood pressure from drugs such as cannabis, un-scientific but at least mentionable in my opinion. Within 15 minutes, there was considerable less pain in my stomach, cramps had ceased and I could go about my day pain-free.

At first I had small amounts on bread, or in a meal. This seemed to curtail the symptoms slightly. I progressed to more, about half a teaspoon was perfect for my symptoms and eradicated them completely for hours, any more and it seemed to aggravate my digestion slightly, understandable for a spice I suppose. This spice worked wonders for crohn's disease, especially if a flare up seems to be gradually setting in, although caution is advised in amounts when starting out .

I could point to a number of reasons for cayennes effect, the anti-inflammatory properties decreasing the inflammation in my intestines, the anti-bacterial properties destroying bacteria in my gut, theorised to cause crohn's, or the stimulating of the digestive track. Or maybe just the placebo effect after reading the Cayenne pepper gospel on a metaphorical shitload of websites, a distinctive answer is unlikely, all I can say for sure is it worked for me.
